DSCC to set up 30 modern bus bays
The Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) has decided to construct 30 bus bays equipped with modern facilities for the convenience of commuters. The bus bays will facilitate getting on and off the bus at designated places. Passengers will be able to wait there during a downpour or hot weather. It will also help reduce accidents. These bus bays will have sidewalks, potable water, WiFi, tea stalls, and mobile phone charging arrangements. Once implemented, the project will revolutionize overall road management, DSCC officials said. They claimed the project would help prevent road accidents and reduce traffic jams caused by stops at random points to pick up and drop off passengers from streets. Bus drivers will face punishment if they do not use the bays, they said. The cost of the Infrastructure Development Project has been estimated at Tk8.26 crore and its construction is expected to finish next June. Rajib Khadem, executive engineer of DSCC’s traffic engineering circle, said: “Once the bus bays are in operation, the city dwellers will no longer face harassment. They will be able to take shelter from the heat of the sun as well as from rain. “There will be greater discipline in the traffic system as well.” He said the construction of a bus bay in Azimpur is already underway. After the work is completed, the mayor will visit the bay. If he is happy with it, then work on the other bays will commence. Sources said the area under DSCC would be divided into three zones for setting up the bus bays. Six bays will be constructed from Manik Mia Avenue to Azimpur. Six more will be constructed to cover the other side of these routes. Three bus bays will be installed in Jatrabari, Ittefaq, and Shapla intersections, Paltan, Shabagh and Panthakunja routes and three more on the other sides of these facilities. On the Moghbazar-Malibagh, Gulistan-Bangshal-Sadarghat routes, six bus bays will be constructed while six others will be set up on the other side. This article was first published on banglatribune.com
