A professor of Dhaka University (DU) allegedly assaulted a fellow teacher on Tuesday. A complaint letter has been submitted to the DU vice chancellor regarding the incident.
According to the complaint letter by victim and DU Information Science and Library Management Department Associate Professor Md Anwarul Islam, he was attacked by Professor Muhammad Mezbah-ul-Islam, chairman of the same department.
“I was unable to come to the university and take classes last Sunday and Monday as my child was ill. Although I had notified the chairman, he used abusive and vulgar language with me when I came to take classes on Tuesday morning. He physically attacked me when I returned to the department office after taking my evening classes,” the letter reads.
It adds that Chairman Mezbah launched the attack when Anwarul refused to file an application explaining his absence and asked to file a leave of absence letter.
“Later, Professor Md Saiful Alam and Professor Md Nasir Uddin Munshi rescued me from the chairman’s room,” Anwarul said in the complaint letter.
When contacted by the Dhaka Tribune, Anwarul said he was taken to the DU Medical Centre for initial treatment before being transferred to the PG Hospital of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University
“Perhaps he beat me due to some kind of anger. I don’t want to say anything as I’m totally depressed,” he added.
Witness Professor Md Saiful Alam said he was unaware of what had happened as he arrived after the incident had already taken place and found Anwarul in tears.
“We will not take part in any academic activity until the situation is resolved properly and necessary steps are taken,” he added.
Meanwhile, Professor Md Nasir Uddin Munshi said: “What happened to Anwarul is mentioned in his complaint letter. I reached the spot later and saw the chairman chaising Anwarul.”
“Anwar was badly injured by the assault,” he added.
Of two other teachers listed as witnesses in the complaint letter, Professor Kazi Mostak Gausul Hoq refused to comment while Professor Md Shiful Islam could not be reached by phone despite repeated attempts.
Accused attacker Professor Muhammad Mezbah-ul-Islam claimed the allegations against him were “false and fabricated” and the university was striving to solve the issue internally.
University sources said both the attacker and victim were members of the pro-BNP White Panel of teachers.
They added that the DU vice-chancellor had asked teachers to resume classes, but the teachers refused to do so until Anwarul received justice.
DU VC Professor Akhtaruzzaman said: “I have instructed the chairman and student advisor of the department to look into the matter and solve it immediately.”
Students of Professor Muhammad Mezbah-ul-Islam said he often used vulgar and abusive language with both male and female students.
