Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Haque has said the nameplate of “Shishu Park”, the children’s amusement park located in Shahbagh, will be changed within a week.
The minister made the statement at a press conference at the Secretariat on Wednesday. The conference was held to discuss the upcoming Independence Day on March 26.
He said: “The name of the park was changed from Zia Shishu Park to just Shishu Park. Now, the nameplate will be changed within a week.”
Secretary of the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs, Aparup Chowdhury, and the government’s Chief Information Officer, Kamrunnahar, were present at the conference.
At the conference, Mozammel said: “This year, Independence Day will be observed in a different manner.
“March 25 will be commemorated this year as Genocide Remembrance Day for the second time. There will be a country-wide blackout for a minute starting at 9pm which will be observed by all Bangalis no matter where they are situated.”
He said: “In order to remind people to put out their lights, we will play a special siren or make an announcement through the loudspeakers in the mosques, three-to-four minutes prior to the blackout,” the minister added.
The minister also said they are attempting to seek approval from member countries of the United Nations (UN) in recognizing March 25 as Genocide Remembrance Day instead of December 9, which was previously declared by the UN.
“There is no historical significance tied to December 9, which is why this resolution has been passed by the government,” Mozammel said.
When asked about whether the grandchildren of freedom fighters will be enjoying quota benefits, Mozammel said: “This is a decision of the government, and will remain as it is mentioned under the freedom fighter category for public employment, unless it is abolished.”
Additional issues discussed at the press conference concerned the freedom fighter list.
“The list will be published after verifying it as accurately as possible within the current period of governance,” Mozammel said.
