A teacher at Dhanmondi Ideal College student hostel has allegedly beaten up nine HSC candidates with a metal rod for celebrating the birthday of one of their friends.
Monirul Islam Sohel, the accused teacher, teaches civics at the college. He is also the nephew of the college’s Principal Jasim Uddin Ahmed and is in charge of the institution’s dormitory.
Students of the college have demanded punishment for the assault.
One of the victims, who declined to be named, said they were celebrating the birthday of a friend at midnight on March 26 at the hostel.
“It is only natural that some noises would be made during such celebrations. But suddenly our teacher Sohel appeared and verbally abused us. He also hit us with an iron rod while his associate Anowar Molla caught the incident on camera,” the student said.
He claimed that Sohel often assaulted them physically: “He often beats us up without any reason. But he crossed the limit this time.”
Another student named Jubayer Hossain described their ordeal on Facebook and posted pictures of the victims.
He described the college’s dormitory as a prison and said Sohel had assaulted the students in the past. Sohel’s accomplice was Anowar, who, instead of stopping the rampaging teacher, encouraged him and recorded the incident on his mobile phone.
Sohel, he wrote, verbally abused the students and denied them medical attention after the first assault. He beat up the students again when they requested medical help, the student alleged.
The teacher in question could not be contacted for comments.
College Principal Jasim defended his nephew, claiming that Sohel had only slapped the students for making noise and hurling eggs and flour at each other.
The students contradicted the principal’s claim that the matter had been resolved.
“We, the HSC candidates, have recently been given a reception where the principal claimed we were like his children,” said one of the students. “Is this how he loves us? Would he ever beat his own children this way? We want justice.”
