Thousands of demonstrators blockade the Shahbagh intersection as part of a nationwide demo on Sunday to push the government to meet five demands for reform in the quota system for government jobs.
They are forced to move from Shahbagh to TSC as police start lobbing teargas shells. The law enforcers also charge baton and use water cannons on the crowd.
Some protesters trying to flee police assault are given chase near Madhur Canteen by a group of Bangladesh Chhatra League activists, led by DU unit General Secretary Motahar Hossain Prince.

Many Chhatra League leaders and activists are seen at Madhur Canteen preparing for a showdown on the campus.
DU Proctor AKM Golam Rabbani tells reporters: “Students should go home right now, and we will discuss the matter and find a solution later. We want a peaceful end to this situation.”
Pushed by police and Chhatra League activists, protesters break into the DU vice-chancellor’s home and vandalize it. They pull out the furniture and set them on fire inside the compound.
Chhatra League DU unit President Abid Al Hasan says miscreants from Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, the BNP student wing, are responsible for this.
Awami League Joint General Secretary Jahangir Kabir Nanok arrives at Shahbagh and announces that the government will sit down with protesters in the morning.
Most demonstrators withdraw from the campus after law enforcers push them towards TSC. Some protesters take shelter in Jagannath Hall and Curzon Hall, and the female protesters stay in TSC.

Police, taking position at the Doyel Chattar, lobs teargas shells toward Curzon Hall, forcing demonstrators to withdraw to Shahidullah Hall which is immediately behind.

Police come to their aid, lobbing teargas shells on the demonstrators in several bouts till almost 7:30am.

After a closed-door meeting with a delegation of demonstrators, Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader announces to the press that a solution to the protesters’ concerns will be produced by May 7.
Leaders of Bangladesh Shadharan Chhatra Odhikar Sangrakkhan Parishad announce to halt their movement for a month. Many protesters reject the move.
Demonstrators reject government assurances of giving a decision after examining the existing quota system, and withdraw the halt on their movement, demanding immediate measures from the authorities.

After daylong protests on DU campus, protesters postpone demonstrations for the night, announcing they would gather at TSC at 11am on Tuesday to carry on their movement.
**A total of 161 protestors were injured in the clashes that took place at Dhaka University campus on Sunday. At least 50 protestors were detained.
**At least 35 students of Jahangirnagar University have been injured during protest programs on their campus on Monday.
