DUTA: Vested quarter spreading rumours to disrupt DU campus
Members of the Dhaka University Teachers Association (DUTA) have said a vested quarter was misleading students of the university and destabilizing the atmosphere on the campus by spreading false rumours. They made the claim at a press conference held at the Dhaka University (DU) Club at noon on Tuesday. “DUTA considered the quota reform movement logical and expressed solidarity with the students through a press release on April 11. The teachers’ forum also urged law enforcers not to take action against the protesting students and demanded initiatives to ensure their safety,” Prof Muhammad Samad said while reading out a statement. “However, a vested quarter is trying to capitalize on the emotion of protesters and mislead them into committing acts of violence in order to pursue their own political interests,” he added. According to the statement, a group had spread a rumour about the death of a protester, and later spread another on April 10 claiming that a Chhatra League leader of Kabi Sufia Kamal Hall had attacked another student. Both of the rumours were proven to be false upon investigation. The DUTA representatives claimed the hall authorities had identified four students of Kabi Sufia Kamal Hall who had spread the rumours and handed three of them over to their guardians after discussion. However, a group spread a rumour that the students were evicted at midnight in order to create a diversion. The teachers also urged law enforcers not to harass any protestors or their family members, and asked the protestors to be alert so that the “faction” cannot take advantage of them. Meanwhile, Pragatisheel Chhatra Jote, an alliance of left leaning student organizations, claimed the university authorities took the decision on the April 10 incident without following due process. At a press conference held at the Madhur Canteen also on Tueaday, they placed seven-point demands including calls to reform the quota system instead of abolishing it. Their other demands include: punishment of law enforcers and Chhatra League activists who had attacked protestors, an immediate election for the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU), allocation of seats in the hall on the basis of merit, the removal of the Kabi Sufia Kamal Hall provost, an end to ragging, “guest room” and other repressive traditions, and the withdrawal of cases filed against protestors.
