'We do not want quota or any kind of privileges, we just want our fathers to be respected'

Muktijoddhar Santan O Prajanma Samannay Parishad, a platform of children of 1971 freedom fighters, on Wednesday demonstrated on Dhaka University (DU) campus to press home their six-point charter of demands.

They had brought out a procession on the campus after holding a rally at the base of Raju Memorial Sculpture at TSC intersection in the afternoon.

The platform alleged that Jamaat-e-Islami, Islami Chhatra Shibir and anti-liberation forces were hatching conspiracies against Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and trying to disrupt the educational environment of the university.

Terming the recent movement seek reformation of the quota system in government jobs a part of the BNP-Jamaat coalition’s plot, the organization’s Convener Asibur Rahman Khan said the freedom fighters did not fight during the 1971 Liberation War for any privileges.

“We do not want quota or any kind of privileges, we just want our fathers to be respected,” he said.

Asibur, son of Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan, also said those who have been continuing the quota reform movement do not believe in freedom and the spirit of Liberation War.

Their six demands include punishment of those who spread rumours during the quota reform movement, stopping recruitment of children of war criminals and anti-liberation forces in government jobs, identifying all Jamaat and Shibir activists from different government posts and dismissing them, and confiscation of all movable and immovable properties of 1971 war criminals.

Students’ platform Bangladesh Sadharan Chhatra Adhikar Sangrakkhan Parishad has been carrying out a movement seeking quota system reformation since mid-February.

The movement garnered support from students across the country in April following overnight violent clashes between the demonstrators, police and Bangladesh Chhatra League at DU and adjacent areas.

Afterwards, the prime minister has announced that the quota system would be scrapped. The government is still working on implementing her directives.
