Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Sayeed Khokon on Monday formally launched a program to identify and destroy the breeding grounds of Aedes mosquito in all the 57 wards under DSCC.

The program has been launched at all the wards at once in a bid to free Dhaka South from chikungunya and dengue diseases during this monsoon.

The mayor started the program by removing the accumulated water from under construction establishments and houses in Satmasjid Road area in Dhanmondi.

Top DSCC officials were present at the time.

Starting from Monday, the drive will continue for the next 15 days.

Under the program, breeding grounds of Aedes mosquitoes will be identified and destroyed in at least 100 households in each of the 57 wards on experimental basis.

Talking to reporters, Sayeed Khokon said that this year the program would be implemented using the experience gathered last year to keep the city dwellers free from the mosquito-borne diseases.

He said the next course of action would be taken on the basis of this home-to-home experiment.

The mayor hoped that this program would be successful if all the city dwellers – from lower class to upper class – get themselves involved with it.

He also sought cooperation from the mass media to create awareness among people for removing the stagnant water in A/C, refrigerators, flower vases and water bottles as Aedes mosquitoes are born in clean water.
