The buildings with 928 flats were inaugurated in Motijheel and Azimpur
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has inaugurated 10 multi-storey buildings in Dhaka’s Motijheel and Azimpur government colonies as part of her government’s plan to raise housing facilities of civil servants from the existing 8% to 40%.
She launched the buildings at separate functions at Motijheel and Azimpur government colonies on Saturday.
The prime minister inaugurated four 20-storey buildings with 532 flats at Motijheel and six 20-storey buildings with 456 flats at Azimpur.
“I want you to live in a modern and healthy atmosphere with your families,” she said, while inaugurating the buildings at Motijheel Government Colony.
She asked the dwellers of the buildings to maintain austerity in using electricity and water, adding that the government is giving huge subsidy for every unit of electricity, gas, and water.
Hasina said similar buildings would be constructed for government employees at district and upazila levels.
The prime minister said the old buildings of the colonies would be demolished for parks, walk space, ponds, and gardens.
Finance Minister AMA Muhith, Housing and Public Works Minister Mosharraf Hossain, Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Housing and Public Works Ministry Dabirul Hossain, and Public Works Secretary Shahidullah Khandakar spoke on the occasions.
Officials said the government has taken the initiative to construct 23 buildings in Dhaka, Chittagong, and other cities with a total capacity of 9,702 flats.
Of them, 524 flats were constructed in 2017 while 928 flats including those at Motijheel and Azimpur government colonies were completed this year.
Construction of 8,190 flats for government employees is under way under 19 projects.
