Protesters alleged that the RMG factory authorities closed down the factory without any prior notice and did not pay due Eid bonuses to their staff and workers.
Hundreds of RMG workers blocked off Kazi Nazrul Islam Avenue, a major street in Dhaka, for around 45 minutes on Tuesday, protesting the closure of a garment factory without prior notice.
The workers of Gold Star Design Limited an RMG factory located in East Tejturi Bazar in Tejgaon – gathered on the street around 10:45am, causing a massive traffic jam during the morning rush hour.
The demonstration caused severe gridlock from the Farmgate to Karwan Bazar area of the VIP road.
Speaking to the Dhaka Tribune, a number of protesters alleged that the RMG factory authorities shut the factory without prior notice and did not pay Eid bonuses due to their staff and workers. The factory also missed several deadlines to pay workers.
They demanded severance pay amounting to one month of their basic salary and a bonus for the Eid-al-Adha.
Adding that all the factory workers have suddenly become unemployed, the demonstrators demanded that the factory authorities pay both the wages and bonuses due to the workers.
Responding to a query, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Assistant Commissioner (Tejgaon) Abu Tayeb Mohammad Arif told the Dhaka Tribune: “The agitated garment workers tried to block off a busy road in the capital, but police removed them from the area.
“The protesters then headed to the BGMEA building to emphasize their demands.”
