A group of unidentified men have attacked several students of University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB), after they ended a human chain as part of the ongoing nationwide movement for safer roads.

The incident happened in and around the university’s Campus B at Dhaka’s Dhanmondi around 6:30pm on Friday.

Some of the victim students and witnesses alleged that the assaulters were activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League. But it was not confirmed.

A number of students were injured in the attack.

It was reported that the attackers beat up some journalists at the time. They also reportedly smashed mobile phones of a number of students for trying to record the incident.

A ULAB student, requesting anonymity, said more than 60 people had launched the assault on them.

After a meeting with the students, ULAB Proctor Moniruzzaman Shipu said the university would file a general diary with the police. The CCTV camera footages would also be examined and handed over to police if necessary.

Dhanmondi police station OC Abdul Latif said he has heard about the incident and were looking into it.

The attackers also vandalized the offices of online portal priyo.com, situated beside ULAB campus on Dhanmondi 7, leaving one of their reporters named Pradip Das injured. He was later hospitalized.

Another priyo.com reporter said one of their photojournalists was also beaten at the time, along with several other journalists who were there.

The students said that some youths had approached their human chain around 3pm and told them to stay on the footpath. They also told the students to wear their identity cards so that activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir could not infiltrate their program.

Around 4pm, the students ended their human chain and went to Science Laboratory intersection to extend their support to the students of different schools and colleges who gathered there for the sixth day to demonstrate and enforce traffic laws on their own.

The attack on the ULAB students took place after they returned from there. Witnesses said 50-60 people in a procession came via Dhanmondi road No 4 and started beating up the students in and outside of the university building.

The attackers, however, left after about 30 minutes. Most of the students are still inside the university building, saying they were feeling unsafe to leave for home.

Students of different educational institutions have been demonstrating across Dhaka for the past six days demanding safe roads and justice for two college students who were killed under the wheels of a speeding bus on the city's Airport Road on July 29.

Apart from blockading the major city streets, the demonstrating students have also been enforcing traffic laws on their own, including checking driving licences and registrations and fitness certificates of the vehicles.

The blockades had brought the capital to its knees with public transport owners suspending services, while the movement spread across the country.
