Hundreds of students demonstrating for road safety came out on Dhaka's streets for a sixth straight day.

They thronged the Manik Mia Avenue and Uttara areas on Friday morning.

At least 150 students from Junior Laboratory High School, Eden College, Mohammad Preparatory High School and College, Dhaka Residential Model College, St Joseph Higher Secondary School and other institutions started gathering at Manik Mia Avenue from 11am.

Some of them formed a human chain on the footpath in front of Aarong – demanding justice and the implementation of their nine-point demands – while others helped in managing the traffic.

A 10th-grader, who joined the protests, said they would not accept anyone's assurances except the prime minister's.

"We want Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to address us directly," she said. "We want her to accept our demands."

Police told the media that they were trying to move the students to one side of the road so that aggravated drivers would not run them over.

The students left the area around 1:30pm.

Meanwhile, hundreds of students from Milestone College, BGMEA University, Uttara University, Santa Mariam University, and other institutions gathered at House Building area in Uttara at 10am. They formed a human chain.

The students called off their demonstration for the day around 1:30pm, citing Friday's Jumma prayers and the scheduled date for the BCS exams.

Police Assistant Commissioner Md Kamruzzaman told the Dhaka Tribune that the students left after police briefed them about the prime minister's promise to meet their demands.

"We told them the prime minister has accepted their demands," he said. "The students were not aware of this. After learning about it, they held the human chain peacefully and left the scene."

The demonstrations mark the sixth day of protests following the killing of two college students in a road accident on Airport Road on Sunday.

Protests spread nationwide as school and college students took to the streets, joining their fellow protesters in Dhaka, demanding road safety and strict implementation of traffic laws.
