Representatives of various journalist organizations have demanded the immediate arrest of culprits who attacked media professionals during the ongoing student movement for safe roads.

The call came at a human chain held in front of the National Press Club on Tuesday.

Present at the program, President of BFUJ journalist Molla Jalal called a nationwide protest program on August 11, in which journalists and media professionals across the country will participate.

“We urge the ministers to act more responsibly. The students’ movement was initially peaceful, which was lauded by the prime minister. But why were some journalists attacked?”

Abu Jafar Surjo, president of DUJ said: “We are giving a three-day ultimatum for the arrest of those responsible for the attack of media professionals during the students’ movement in Dhaka.

“The information minister is yet to visit those injured in the protest movement.”

Speaking as the Chief Guest, former BFUJ present Manjurul Ahsan Bulbul said: “Those who attacked us and those who are spreading false rumours, are both enemies of journalists.”

He also urged the government to arrange treatment for those injured in the students’ movement.

Addressing the demonstration, National Press Club General Secretary Farida Yasmin said: “We condemn the attack of journalists and implore the government to take measures for preventing such incidents from happening in the future.

“We will take to the streets if violence against media professionals continues to occur.”

Organizations such as Bangladesh Photo journalist Association, Dhaka Reporter's Unity, Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) and Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) participated in the demonstration. A protest rally was also held during the event.

President of DRU Saiful Islam was present among others at the event.
