Government instruction for Eid slaughtering goes unheeded

Most people in Dhaka performed the ritualistic animal sacrifice in the designated slaughter spots

Update : 22 Aug 2018, 04:00 PM

Ignoring the government instruction to use the designated spots for slaughtering, Dhaka residents sacrificed their cattle for Eid-ul-Azha on the streets and open spaces on Wednesday.

The Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) had specified 543 spots and Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) 620 spots for the city residents to perform the ritual of sacrificing animals on the Eid day.

However, the government's drive and campaign in this regard apparently failed as people hardly followed the instruction, reported UNB.

People opted to sacrifice their cattle on the streets in front of their houses. They were seen slaughtering the sacrificial animals in any convenient space in Bailey Road, Shantinagar and Siddheswari, making the open spaces dirty – with bloods running down the streets.

Many families used their car parks for the slaughtering, then sweeping off the blood and animal remains off to the streets with water.

This year, the city authorities in 11 city corporations designated 2,954 spots for slaughtering sacrificial animals on Eid-ul-Azha.

Besides Dhaka, Rajshahi has 210 spots, Chittagong has 314, Khulna 163, Barisal 135, Sylhet 36, Narayanganj 183, Rangpur 117, Comilla 190 Gazipur 443.
