Police filed a petition with a Dhaka court on Monday to show Mozammel Haque Chowdhury, secretary general of Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity, arrested in another case filed with Kafrul police station under the Explosive Substances Act.

Jayedur Rahman, a counsel of Mozammel, said Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mazharul Haq fixed September 13 for hearing the petition filed by the investigation officer of the case.

Another Dhaka court on Saturday sent the Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity (Bangladesh passengers Welfare Association) leader to jail after rejecting a remand prayer in a case filed over extortion.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Golam Nabi had passed the order after Bazlur Rahman, sub-inspector of Mirpur Model Police Station and investigation officer of the case, produced him before the court with a fresh five-day remand prayer after the end of a one-day remand.

Police arrested Mozammel from his Sanarpar house in Narayanganj in an extortion case filed with Mirpur Model Police Station on September 6.

Later in the day, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Mazharul Haque placed him on a one-day remand.

Mozammel’s unconditional release demanded

Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity demanded the unconditional release of Mozammel.

The Samit Monday at a press conference, sought the prime minister’s intervention on the matter and demanded a trial of the ones who falsely filed an extortion case against Mozammel on Thursday.

Human Rights activist Sultana Kamal condemned the arrest of Mozammel at the press conference and demanded his immediate release.

She said: “Every citizen has the right to travel safely and it falls under their fundamental rights. It would be an insult if we do not take such a matter seriously.”

“In the midst of all the chaotic things happening every day with commuters, Mozammel has been selflessly working for the general people’s rights. It is not expected that a man of his calibre is accused in a false case and is in jail now. I strongly condemn this.”

“Members of the law enforcement agencies are doing these unlawful things along with corrupt people, by using the law in their favour, in which the helpless and innocent are suffering immensely,” Sultana added.

At the same time she urged the government to provide security for Dulal, who filed the case against Mozammel—as Dulal told various media outlets that he did not know Mozammel. Dulal also claimed that he just signed a piece of paper that was brought to him by two labour leaders.

Jatri Kalyan Samity Central member Shamsuddin Chowdhury read a written statement at the conference.

He said: “A person who works for the betterment of people should not be harassed like this. And if the law enforcers do such acts, then where else can we go?”

Mozammel’s wife Rizu akhter Chowdhury in a teary voice said: “I never thought that working for general people would land my husband in jail. I strongly urge the prime minister to intervene in this matter.”

Ganosamhati Andolon Convener Junaid Saki said: “A syndicate is massively benefitting from the transport sector. It these people are slightly affected, then the scenario will change. An example of which is Mozammel Hoque.”

Another case was filed against Mozammel, in February, at Kafrul police station—for which he was taken to court on Monday. The hearing of the case has been set for Tuesday.

Earlier, Mozammel was arrested on Thursday. “Police produced him before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court and sought a seven-day remand,” Mirpur police station’s OC Dadan Fakir said.

A person named Dulal, from the transport sector, filed the case with Mirpur police station on Tuesday.

According to case details, Mozammel demanded Tk2 lakh as extortion from Dulal. He already gave the Jatri Kalyan Samity leader Tk10, 000, the case details said.

However, when contacted, plaintiff Dulal told various media outlets that he did not know Mozammel. Dulal claimed that he only signed a piece of paper that was brought to him by two labour leaders.
