Human rights activists and media experts at a roundtable have called on people to be united against all irregularities and injustice with the spirit of Liberation War.

They also voiced concern over the fact that people lack freedom of expression as the government has imposed rules and regulations with legislative power.

Citizens Committee organized the discussion titled “State and Citizens: Roles and Responsibilities’’ at Cirdap auditorium on Monday.

Prof Anu Muhammad, member secretary of the National Committee to protect Oil, Gas, and Mineral Resources, Power and Ports, said any criticism against government move is considered to be seditious.

He said police and RAB have been given uncontrolled power.

“The constitution has provided the government with unilateral power through a legal structure,” he said.

Bangladesh Adivasi Forum General Secretary Sanjeeb Drong said the government has tried to suppress all the recent movements.

“The government has developed a culture of fear by using police and RAB to harass people,” he said.

Dhaka University mass communication and journalism department Prof Gitiara Nasreen said: “There is no place where people can get justice and those who are in power are continuously depriving the people of their rights.”

Rights activist Sultana Kamal said the government failed to keep its pledge to build a secular and democratic country.

“People should stand against those who have created an unstable and communal state mechanism by cashing in on the spirit of the Liberation War,” she said.

Prof Ajay Roy there should be a strong opposition for the wellbeing of the people and the state.

“It is not good for the state and people if a government stays in power for long,” he said.
