The department’s boss says they have found 20-22 people involved in khat-smuggling

The Department of Narcotics Control (DNC) has appealed to the Ministry of Home Affairs to ban khat, a New Psychotropic Substance (NPS) drug, says its chief.

DNC Director General Mohammed Jamal Uddin Ahmed, at a press release on Wednesday said: “Progress has been made to ban khat. We hope it will soon be banned as a drug.”

Jamal was briefing the press at the DNC head office in Tejgaon.

He said, during drives and following a number of seizures, they have found 20-22 people involved in khat-smuggling.

“We are conducting further investigations against them,” the DNC chief said.

In reply to a question about restrictions in the law concerning detaining drug traders, the DG said, "If we pass the new law which has already been drafted, we can easily bring godfathers and traders to justice.

“The prime minister and home minister have declared zero tolerance against drugs; we are working to implement it.”

The DNC DG said: “DNC has already received two executive magistrates for immediate trial. It will be possible to conduct special operations through them and it is a major change in the department to combat narcotics.”

Responding to a question about the Narcotics Control Act-2018, DG Jamal said: “We’ve provided a list of new narcotics to add in the new law. If it goes through, the department will be empowered to ban any drug.”

When asked why bars are being raided despite having licences, Jamal said: “One of the conditions for granting a licence is for the bars to regularly inform authorities about where the liquors are purchased from and for how much. These raids are just for monitoring whether the guidelines are being followed.”

DNC will participate in the development fair from 4 to 6 of this month which will be held at Agargaon. All the services of the department will meet there.

Jamal further said: “Anti-narcotics campaign will be held in every district on the occasion of the fair.

“There will also be advice given about drug treatment and licensing applications. Anyone can immediately take information and services from the stalls. ”

Jamal said the department conducted special drives across the country between September 20 and 26.

“During this period, 559 cases were filed and 603 people were arrested,” he said.

The department also carried out a total of 59,506 drives from January to August, filed 8,406 cases, and arrested 9,320 drug dealers.

DG Jamal added: “The task-force conducted operations at homes of top listed drug traders in Cox's Bazar. The drug syndicates have been shaken to their core.”
