A platform for the descendants of freedom fighters staged a rally in Dhaka on Thursday to demand the reinstatement of their 30% quota privilege in government jobs.

Muktijuddho Moncho began their eight-hour rally in front of the National Museum at Shahbagh in the capital at 10am.

At the rally, Muktijuddho Moncho Convener and spokesperson Prof AKM Jamal Uddin said the platform would submit a memorandum to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to press home their 11-point demands on October 30.

“We will stage protests in front of the offices of the country’s eight divisional commissioners from Friday to Monday,” he said.

Prof Jamal said that apart from in Dhaka City, freedom fighters' descendants will submit the memorandum from each district to the PM through the respective district commissioners.

“I urge the protesters to continue demonstrations until the platform’s demands are met,” he said.

Addressing the rally as a guest, Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan expressed solidarity with protesters.

"All of our demands will be met if we can rid the country of anti-liberation forces by identifying them," he said.

"We have to make a list of the culprits who were involved in hatching conspiracies against the nation in 1971."

The shipping minister further said that re-electing Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was best way to bring Muktijuddho Moncho’s demands to fruition.

He asked the descendants of freedom fighters to spread their movement nationwide, saying: "A movement is the only way to materialize legitimate demands."

On October 4, the government issued a circular abolishing the quota system for recruitment to first and second class government jobs.

Under the old system, about 56% of government jobs had been reserved for candidates under various quotas, of which 30% were set aside for freedom fighters’ children and grandchildren.

Of the remaining spaces, 10% were reserved for women, 10% for people from underdeveloped districts, 5% for members of indigenous communities, and 1% for people with disabilities.
