Workers of Esteem Wears Ltd vandalized machineries of the factory on Monday for their six-month due payment in Sreepur municipality area of Gazipur.
The workers said the authorities had not given their salaries over last six months and fired many of them without issues.
They added the authorities sat with them several times and fixed November 5, for giving their dues at a meeting on October 25.
Like other days the workers came to the factory to perform their duties on the day, but they found the presence of a lot of police personnel in the area.
Around 10am, the workers got involved with an altercation with Production Manager Rezaul Karim about the police presence.
Asia Akter, Sohag Mian and Zarina Begum, sewing operators at the factory said they had come to the office with a hope of salary.
But the authorities threatened them with the police when they came to their working place, they added.
On the other hand, General Manager of the factory Razib Kuri said the agitated workers got locked in an altercation with the production manager. At one stage, they vandalized more than 150 machines of the factory and damaged valuable instruments.
Razib said, “As we could not bring money from Dhaka yet, it was not possible to pay the bill today.”
The workers would get only 45 days’ salary, he added.
Around 2pm, they came out and blocked the Sreepur-Maona road demanding their due salaries and protesting the speech of the GM.
Sub Inspector Iskander Habib of Gazipur Industrial police, said they had been patrolling outside the industry since early morning as a part of their regular duties.
“We entered inside the industry on information that the workers vandalized the machineries,” he added.
“When the police brought the situation under control, the workers went out, blocked the road causing heavy traffic jam in Notun Bazar area,” he also said.
