Journalists attacked in Nawabganj

Reporters from a TV channel and a newspaper, were attacked at the hotel they are staying in

Miscreants attacked journalists and vandalized a local hotel and several media vehicles in Nawabganj on Monday night.

The incident took place around 10pm at when at least 40 journalists of Jamuna TV and the daily Jugantor came under attack and 16 media vehicles were vandalized.

Journalists staying at the Shamim Guest House in Nawabganj barred themselves in for about an hour while the attackers went on a rampage.

Sushanta Sinha, special correspondent of Jamuna Television said: “Around 30-35 men attacked our hotel. We informed the upazila executive officer and the local station’s officer-in-charge but did not get any response. If media workers are attacked like this, then where is the security for ordinary voters?”

In a Facebook post, Sushanta wrote that 10 journalists were injured.

The law enforcement were informed immediately but did not reach the place of the incident on time, he said.

Jugantor Staff Reporter Yasin said: "We were getting out to have some tea. At the stairs, we heard some noise on the ground floor.

"Soon after, some men wielding rods and hockey sticks came up and attacked us. The miscreants carried out an hour-long attack and vandalized the hotel. Around 10-12 journalists were injured."
