Two suspected robbers have been beaten to death by an angry mob in Gazipur.

The incident took place in Kaliganj upazila of the district around 2am on Wednesday night.

Locals identified one of the deceased as Omar Faruk of Narsingdi district, but could not determine the other's identity, while both the robbers appeared to be 40 years of age.

According to locals, and Kaliganj City Union Chairman Abdul Kadir, a gang of robbers broke into a house in the Rathura area and looted some gold ornaments and other valuables from the residence.

After the initial robbery, they tried to break into a neighbouring house, whose residents sensed their presence and informed the other villagers about the robbers. Later, the locals made an announcement informing everyone about the robbers through the microphone of the local mosque.

The angry locals detained the robbers and beat them to death on spot, they informed the police after the incident had already taken place. However, their fellow robbers were able to escape.

Police have recovered used cleaver, machete, bolt cutter, and equipments for breaking and entering from the deceased robbers, local Ulukhola police outpost Sub-Inspector (SI) Golam Mawla told the Dhaka Tribune.

He said: "The bodies of the robbers have been kept in the Gazipur Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital morgue."

Meanwhile, there has been a rise in robbery for the last three weeks in Kaliganj. On January 8, several houses in the upazila's Tumulia union's Puinartek village were robbed. The robbers plundered their cash, gold ornaments and many other valuables holding the residents in gunpoint.

Villagers claimed that they have earlier also complained of robbery in different areas of Kaliganj and the rise in robbery has created a precarious environment in the area.

Commenting on the matter, Kaliganj police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abu Bakr Miah said: "We are preparing to file a case for the mass beating. However, we have found no evidence on the allegations of the past robberies. Earlier, there was an incident in which a person was injured in a CNG-run autorickshaw robbery, but no cases were filed on the matter."
