The dreams of a 33-year old aspiring businessman were burnt to ashes with the houses in Old Dhaka’s Chawkbazar on Wednesday.

Yasin Khan Rony had been struggling to establish his father’s Khan Enterprise-- business of plastic grains (raw material) -- for years, with the limited money they had.

Despite being from a middle-income family, he chased the dream of becoming a successful businessman like many others in Old Dhaka, ever since his graduation.

Rony started putting his money together as an honours student at Mirpur Bangla College, and finally was able to contribute something to their family business.

Every day, he would close the shop around 11pm, but on Wednesday, somehow he decided to relieve his shop manager and staff around 10pm.

Something made him feel uneasy, that is what he told Ahmed--the landlord of the shop-- while leaving early.

The 33-year-old, who is also the younger brother of Dhaka Tribune’s Graphic Designer, Mohammad Razon, started walking towards his home after locking his shop.

Rony left almost an hour earlier than his usual time, only to meet his death on the way to his house on KB Rudro Road, which is just a 100 yards away the spot of the blast.

Mohammad Razon, eldest among the four siblings, said the blast took place when Rony was crossing the intersection of five roads in front of Haji Wahed Mansion.

After laying his beloved brother’s body in the grave, Razon spoke to the Dhaka Tribune.

He said: “I returned from office around 11:15pm [Wednesday] and started the search for my younger brother. Rony’s phone was constantly unreachable. Around 12:15am [Thursday], I started having doubts and realized that something had actually gone wrong with him [Rony].”

The victim’s brother continued: “We searched many hospitals to see if my brother was injured, but we failed. He could not be traced.

“Around 3:30am, I checked the register of Dhaka Medical College Hospital’s morgue and found a body tagged with the name Md Khan. His age was mentioned as 43.”

He added: “I thought to myself, but my brother is 33. The hospital authority did not allow us to see the body at night for identification.”

The family, which was already burdened with the horrific thought of losing their loved one, had to wait until 7am to finally identify Rony.

Their mother became unconscious and had to be treated by a doctor when she saw her loving son’s burned face.  His father stood strongly beside the family, even though he was broken inside.

Razon said: “His face had been burned totally. However, his unharmed legs and pair of trousers looked very familiar to me. I also noticed an artificial bone made of iron on the body’s right hand. That is when I realized it was my brother in bag No. 37 at DMCH morgue.

“The artificial bone had been installed in his hand just six months ago when he suffered an orthopaedic injury.”

Rony, who belongs to Muslim family, prayed regularly and his pair of trousers would always be folded at the bottom for namaz, in the same way as the trousers on the body.

Even when the family was going through immense pain, they welcomed this correspondent to their house, following their tradition by giving their  guest “Bakarkhani”-- spiced flatbread-- and sweets.
