BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir expressed deep shock over the deadly fire incident that broke out in Chawkbazar area of Old Dhaka Wednesday night.
He said: “People are dying due to irresponsibility and mismanagement of the Awami League government.”
The senior BNP leader came up with the allegation after paying tribute to the Language Movement martyrs at Azimpur graveyard in city on Thursday morning.
“Awami League government has failed in all areas. People are dying everywhere and all of these are happening due to mismanagement of the government,” Fakrul said.
He also alleged that Awami League only wants to rule but has no good intention to run the government properly.
At least 70 people have been killed in a massive fire that engulfed several multi-storey buildings at Nanda Kumar Lane in Chawkbazar’s Churihatta area. However, the death toll may rise.
According to the Fire Service control room, a total of 37 units from 31 stations have worked frantically to douse the blaze.
The bodies of 67 people burned to death in the fire, have been taken to the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) morgue.
Among the recovered bodies, 58 are male, five are female, and the rest are children, confirmed Muradul Islam, officer-in-charge (investigation) of Chawkbazar police station.
He said so far, they have been able to identify 19 of the victims.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has expressed deep shock over the Chawkbazar fire which broke out last night. She also conveyed her condolences to those affected.
