ULAB holds 5th convocation

Bangladesh President Md Abdul Hamid opened the convocation and presided over the ceremony

The University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB) on Monday held its 5th convocation, at the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC) in Dhaka. 

Bangladesh President Md Abdul Hamid opened the convocation and presided over the ceremony.

In his speech at the convocation, the president said: “Education is directly related to the students. However, the student’s families, their expectations, and dreams play important roles in their success.”

“Universities are not just centres for teaching, they are also the best place for higher education and research. Universities are important for training students and turning them into world class citizens,” he added.

He also said that producing creative and talented manpower is essential for the balanced development of industries, literature and culture, as well as socio-economic development. 

Special guests at the convocation included: Dr Dipu Moni, minister of Education; Mohibul Hassan Chowdhoury, deputy minister of Education; and Professor Abdul Mannan, chairman of the University Grants Commission of Bangladesh. Noted scientist and educationist Prof Muhammed Zafar Iqbal addressed the occasion as the Convocation Speaker. 

Dr Kazi Anis Ahmed, vice president of the ULAB Board of Trustees, and Professor HM Jahirul Haque, ULAB vice chancellor, also spoke on the occasion..   

President Hamid presented the Valedictorian's award to Priyanka Chowdhury of the department of media studies and journalism. He also awarded gold medals to Piu Chowdhury (department of English and humanities) and Mithun Biswas (department of computer science and engineering) from the undergraduate programs, and Rubaiya Hossain Disha (department of English and humanities) from the graduate programs. 

A total of 1,302 students, including 1,019 undergraduates and 283 graduates, received their certificates this year.
