The death of a child mobilized residents of Uttara to set up roadblocks and shut down the crucial Airport Road leading to a citywide traffic jam.

Wednesday, an incensed mob of over 6,000 took to the streets after the dead body of a child was discovered after three days. The protesters shut down the road from Uttara Rajlokkhi Complex to Jasimuddin, causing traffic to pile up all along Airport Road, and by extension, the rest of Dhaka.

According to protesters, an eight-year-old boy named Rifat was flying a kite on Wednesday when it crashed on the roof of a nearby building. When Rifat went to the roof of the building with two friends to collect his kite, he was allegedly choked to death by Ajit Kumar Basak - the landlord - and his body was dumped in the water tank. His two friends managed to flee.

Rifat’s father, Abdur Rashid, said when he went to the house the caretaker did not allow them in.

Later, police went to the house on Tuesday night and found the body around 11pm.

The next morning, people started protesting around 10am. Traffic was also aggravated by the downpour since morning, and the traffic advisory, in place for the Dhaka North City Corporation mayoral elections on Thursday.

Rashid accused the police of refusing to accept the case when he first tried to file it. He said they only relented after the mass protests.

Rifat was buried after evening prayers on Wednesday.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Uttara Division Additional Deputy Commissioner, Nurul Alam, told the Dhaka Tribune that the situation was under control.

He said a case has been filed against Ajit Kumar Basak and his wife, Rekha Rani Basak.
