Chawkbazar fire death toll rises to 71

Zakir has died at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital burn unit

The death toll in the devastating Chawkbazar fire has reached 71, with the death of another injured victim at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).

The deceased was identified as Zakir Hossain, 35, son of the late Abdur Rashid who hailed from Babubazar area of Old Dhaka. He is survived by a son and a daughter.  

Confirming the matter to the Dhaka Tribune, DMCH Burn Unit Resident Physician, Dr Partha Shankar Pal Zakir said Zakir was receiving treatment at the unit’s ICU and died around 8:22am on Saturday.

Dr Partha also said Zakir suffered 35% burns to his body, and his condition had deteriorated over the past couple of days.

The body is being kept at the hospital morgue, he added.

On the night of February 20, a massive fire tore through several multi-storey buildings on Nanda Kumar Lane in Chawkbazar’s Churihatta area of Old Dhaka; killing 67 people on the spot and injuring scores more.

Three injured victims—Anwar, 55, Sohag, 20, and Rezaul, 21—have died of their burns while undergoing treatment at DMCH.
