Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia has claimed that all Suprovat Paribahan buses have been banned from operating on the streets of Dhaka city since Tuesday night.

He stated this at a press briefing on Pragati Sarani Street in front of Jamuna Future Park, at Kuril—where the fatal accident had occurred—around 11:30am on Wednesday.

The police commissioner said: "To ensure road safety, we will take strict legal action against the drivers who: drive recklessly, participate in speed racing, overtake, plus onboard passengers in the middle of the road and create blockages."

"We are trying to bring back discipline to traffic on the streets, and have accepted the demands of the students; however fulfilling all of them will required time," the DMP chief added.

Both Dhaka North City Corporation Mayor Atiqul Islam, who was there present, and the DMP chief requested that all students return to their classrooms.

Earlier in the day, students of several private universities and other educational institutes boycotted classes in solidarity with the protests demanding safer roads in Dhaka.

Demonstrators from the Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP), North South University, and Independent University Bangladesh have been participating in the protest since Tuesday.

Previously, on Tuesday, Abrar Ahmed Chowdhury—an honours first year student of BUP’s International Relations program—was run over and killed on the spot by a Suprovat Paribahan bus while crossing the road; he had been using a zebra crossing in front of Jamuna Future Park at Kuril.
