Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Atiqul Islam has laid the foundation stone of a foot overbridge, in memory of Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP) student Abrar Ahmed Chowdhury.

The mayor, alongside Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia and BUP Vice-Chancellor Maj Gen Md Emdad-ul-Bari, laid the foundation stone on Wednesday morning.

The bridge will be constructed on top of the zebra crossing in front of Jamuna Future Park at Kuril, the spot where Abrar was run over and killed by a Suprovat Paribahan bus on Tuesday.

Abrar's death sparked a massive protest by students from different universities, who have been observing demonstrations by blocking the streets in different parts of Dhaka, demanding justice for Abrar and capital punishment for those responsible, since Tuesday.

The mayor said the students' demands are logical, and the government is trying to its best to ensure road safety.

He assured the foot overbridge will be completed within the next two months.

This is the second wave of student protests demanding road safety, after students took the streets all across the country in August last year, after the death of two students were run over by a bus on  Airport Road in Dhaka.
