A modern circular bus route service has been launched between Dhanmondi and Azimpur in Dhaka.

This service—that will cover the Dhanmondi, Science Lab, New Market, and Azimpur areas—was inaugurated by Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Md Sayeed Khokon on Wednesday morning.

Khokon will also serve as the chief of a committee to manage the bus service through a firm. Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC) will supervise the service; that will cost Tk10, Tk20, or Tk30, depending on the distance travelled.

Speaking at the inauguration event, DSCC Mayor Sayeed Khokon said: “The committee is working according to the guidelines of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. As part of this initiative, this circular route bus service has been launched.

Meanwhile, present at the inauguration event, Dhaka North City Corporation Mayor (DNCC) Md Atiqul Islam said: “We will ensure safer roads with a combined effort by everyone in this city. The effect of this effort will be visible soon.”

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) comissioner Asaduzzaman Mia said: “We want to re-establish discipline in the transportation sector within the next 15 days. We do not want any more casualties on the roads.

“Along with the newly-launched bus service on these routes, two more services—in Uttara and Motijheel—will soon be introduced. This initiative will lessen the number of private and non-motorized vehicles on the streets.”

Modernized mass transport

The DMP sent a list of recommendations to the committee, pointing out a lack of modernized mass transport in upscale areas such as Dhanmondi and New Market. The police then proposed a bus service in those areas to reduce congestion caused by private vehicles and rickshaws.

The Dhanmondi-Azimpur route bus service was launched following the DMP recommendation.

The bus service will have 36 stops, and all of them will have ticket counters. Buses will be available to commuters at five-to-ten minute intervals.

DTC Chairman Khandakar Rakibur Rahman chaired the event, which was attended by Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) chairman Moshiar Rahman, and BRTC Chairman Farid Uddin Bhuiyan and many others.
