Sayeed Khokon: 4,500 new buses to be introduced
Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Sayeed Khokon briefs the media on Wednesday afternoon at Nagar Bhaban in Dhaka Dhaka Tribune

He said that the proposed bus service rationalization will be implemented within two years

Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Sayeed Khokon has said some 4,500 new buses—half of which will be air conditioned—will be introduced in the capital, whereas, all old buses will be removed.

He said that the proposed bus service rationalization will be implemented within two years.

Khokon made the announcement while briefing the media on Wednesday afternoon at Nagar Bhaban in Dhaka after the fifth meeting of a committee formed to bring discipline to the public transportation sector and easing commuter suffering in Dhaka.

The mayor on Wednesday, also the chief of the committee, said the rationalization is an uphill task as it involves procurement of buses, training of drivers and even construction of depots.

“We discussed various issues related to the matter. We are trying to bring all the buses plying in the city under a certain number of companies,” Sayeed Khokon said.

According to him, there are some 2,400-2,500 bus owners in the city.

The sub-committee in its next meeting will table a proposal on the number of companies to be formed in this regard, he said.

Terming the recently launched circular bus service as a part of the rationalization, he said the move is designed to reduce traffic gridlocks and facilitate AC bus service at reasonable costs.

The circular bus service will be introduced on the Uttara-Motijheel route by the end of this month, he said.

“The service will roll on from early May,” the mayor said.

The Dhaka north and south city corporations launched the circular service on March 27 on two routes. As per the plan, four AC buses are plying between Dhanmondi and Azimpur route, and four double-deckers are hitting the Abdullahpur-Motijheel route.

Regarding the outcome of the circular services launched, he said any given project may have some loopholes at the outset and time is needed to overcome those and improve.

Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Md Atiqul Islam and Abul Kalam Azad, principal coordinator of SDG Affairs at the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) were present at the meeting.
