'Her full body system — liver, lung, kidney — has deteriorated'

The madrasa student from Feni’s Sonagazi upazila, who was set on fire, has been put on life support at the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH).

She was put on life support around 12am Monday, Md Abul Kalam, chief of the medical board formed for treatment of the victim, told the Dhaka Tribune.

He said: “Her full body system — liver, lung, kidney — has deteriorated. She is having problems breathing.”

When asked about the next step in her treatment, Md Abul Kalam said: “Her treatment is still continuing with full force.”

Resident Doctor of the Burn and Plastic Surgery Unit Dr Partha Shankar Pal told the Dhaka Tribune: "Her condition is not improving, but we are trying our best to save her."

Regarding the victim’s family’s demand to take her abroad for treatment, the doctor said it was not necessary as DMCH has adequate facilities.

On Saturday, the victim, an Alim examinee from Sonagazi Islamia Fazil (Degree) Madrasa, was set on fire by four burqa-clad girls on the madrasa rooftop. A case has been filed with Sonagazi police station regarding the incident, according to Officer-in-Charge Md Moazzem Hossen.

Police have detained two suspects for interrogation.

The victim’s family has alleged she was attacked by supporters of madrasa Principal Sirajuddaula for lodging a case against him - accusing him of attempting to rape the girl in his office.

Critically injured, she was taken to the Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery at DMCH, where the authorities on Sunday formed an eight-member medical board for her treatment.

All academic activities, except Alim examinations, at the madrasa have been suspended until April 17, after the arson attack made headlines and sparked outrage across the country.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has also ordered immediate arrest of those involved in the attack and asked the hospital to provide all necessary treatment to the victim.
