Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) formed a human chain on the Dhaka University campus on Sunday, demanding exemplary punishment of the killers of Feni madrasa student Nusrat Jahan Rafi.

About a hundred protesters gathered for the human chain, which was staged in the TSC area of DU at 11am on Sunday.

Speaking at the demonstration, TIB Executive Director Dr Iftekharuzzaman said: "This case is an 'acid test' for the government. If the government wants to prove itself as a believer of rule of law, then this is the prime time. We can keep faith in the rule of law if Nusrat gets justice."

“If they fail to prove so, then the people of this country will no longer have faith in the government, as well as in the justice system,” he added.

Iftekharuzzaman said he has a little faith on the matter, and that their demand would be achieved in the true sense, adding: “The reason behind keeping little faith is we have already heard from our honourable judges that they have lost their faith in the judicial process. Law enforcement agencies and local governments are partially responsible for this.”

“I think, a part of our law enforcement agencies are suffering from some sort of mental health disorder. They are corrupted, politically manipulated and involved with corruption, comprehensively."

"In our country, sometimes we experience that law enforcement agencies give shelter to the perpetrators of crimes, rather than to the victims. That should not happen at all in an independent country,” Iftekharuzzaman added.

He also alleged that law enforcement officials engage in corruption with the help of the local administration and local influential people.

He said: “We will continue our protest as independent citizens, despite the base of our faith getting weak.”

He urged the government to remain above fear and mercy and mete out stern punishments to those who were directly or indirectly involved in the killing of Nusrat.

On April 6, madrasa student and Alim examinee Nusrat Jahan Rafi was set ablaze on the roof of the madrasa by alleged supporters of the now-sacked madrasa principal, Sirajuddaula, after she refused to withdraw a case she had filed against him on March 27 for sexual harassment.

The 18-year-old, with 80% burns on her body, died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on April 10 after battling death for five days.

Following her death, a total of 21 people were arrested, including local ruling party leaders. Eight of the arrestees have given confessional statements before the court so far.
