Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal has said that only if there is an arrest warrant issued against DIG Mizanur Rahman, he will definitely be arrested. He can also surrender if he wants.

He made the remark while replying to reporters after a seminar on "Drug Abuse and Against Illegal Drug Trade" organized by Department of Narcotics, marking the International Day Against Drug Abuse, and Illicit Trafficking at Krishibid Institute auditorium at Farmgate in Dhaka on Wednesday.

When asked if DIG Mizan could flee the country, the home minister said: “As far as I know, he is in the country.”

“If DIG Mizan wanted to hide, that is a different matter. He can do it,” he added.

He added that legal steps are being taken against DIG Mizan.

Asaduzzaman Khan emphasized that the present government is steadfast in eradicating drugs, and said: "We are working on hindering the demand and supply of drugs, and the rehabilitation of drug abusers at the same time. We are focusing on creating a social movement regarding decreasing the demand for drugs. A social resistance will be built up by involving people of all strata."

He said: "The Department of Narcotics Control has organized 7,898 meetings in various educational institutions. Anti-drugs committees have also been created in more than 28,000 educational institutions.

The coastguard, and the BGB has been strengthened to halt the supply of drugs. Apart from that, our law enforcement agencies are regularly working to curb the drug trade, he said.

The minister said that the drug trade will be stopped at any cost, and added that those who have been involved in the trade will be stopped from doing so, and harsh steps will be taken against them.

The drug peddlers have surrendered in various parts of the country due to the pressure from the law enforcement. If they do not stop their business on their own accord, only God knows what's in their lot, Asaduzzaman threatened.

Regarding the rehabilitation of drug abusers, he said that the government has increased the number of government drug rehabilitation centres. Also, government hospitals, and non government hospitals are giving treatment to drug addicts.

While addressing a reporter’s query, on whether an additional superintendent of police (Addional SP) will be made the officer-in-charge of police stations instead of non-cadre officials, the home minister said that the government has not made such a decision.
