Muktijuddho Moncho, the platform of descendants of freedom fighters, has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to withdraw 'controversial remarks' made by Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader.

They also demanded Obaidul Quader's apology to the nation for his remarks allowing the family members of war criminal and Jamaat-e-Islami leaders to get the membership status of Awami League.

Convener of Muktijuddho Moncho, Dhaka University Sociology department Prof Dr AKM Jamal Uddin, came up with the demand at a press conference held at the Dhaka University Journalists' Association (Duja) office in the afternoon.

Obaidul Quader, at Awami League party office on June 30, said it would not be a problem for those who came from the family of war criminals and Jamaat-e-Islami leaders to become an Awami League member.

AKM Jamal threatened to go for tougher movement from tomorrow if their demands are not met.

Meanwhile, the road transport minister at the Secretariat on Thursday said no one of the anti-liberation force would be allowed to become a member of the ruling party as the fresh member collection drive will scheduled to begin from July 21.

While reading out a written statement, Prof Jamal said: “Such kind of speech made by the party's general secretary clearly goes with the anti-liberation force and spirit of independence that is why we, the descendants, are rejecting his speech and hope that Obaidul Qauder will withdraw what he said. We are also expecting that he will express an apology to the nation for his controversial speech within next 48 hours.”

“Otherwise, we will take to the streets demanding Obaidul Qauder’s resignation, as well as a human chain will be formed at the Shahbag intersection on July 6,” he added.
