Singapore physicians discouraged airlifting Ershad there in current condition

Former president HM Ershad has been put on life support as the Jatiya Party chairman’s health has worsened while undergoing treatment at the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka on Thursday.

Ershad has been undergoing treatment at the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) from June 22. Some 12 days after he was admitted in the hospital, he has now been placed under life support.

GM Quader said the health condition of Ershad was not improving as physicians expected. He said on Thursday evening while speaking at a press conference at Jatiya Party chairman's Banani office.

The Jatiya Party acting chairman and HM Ershad's younger brother, GM Quader said: "For last three days his condition was showing signs of improvement but, since Thursday afternoon, the physicians at the CMH informed us that his [Ershad] health condition was further deteriorating and he is required to put on life support or put on ventilation."

"Around 4:10pm we were informed that former president was put on life support," GM Quader said.

He said Ershad's vital organs; as such lung, kidney, and digestive system were not functioning properly. The X-Ray report shows that his lung is mostly clear but the level of infection in his blood did not decrease.

His kidneys are not functioning normally which allowed body waste to accumulate and spread toxic substances in his body. Almost all of his organs have started showing malfunctioning, he added.

He said after their visit at the CMH at around 2pm on Thursday, CMH authorities sent the health reports to the physicians at National University of Singapore Hospital through mail, where the party chief has undergone treatment previously.

They wanted to learn if Ershad could be airlifted to Singapore hospital, he added.

They got reply in the afternoon where the physicians from Singapore discouraged them to take Ershad abroad in his current health condition, as it would be too risky, Quader said.

Earlier on Thursday, GM Quader, in his first press briefing at 12pm, said his brother's drowsiness has increased and he remains asleep almost all the time.

"Physicians are not considering it as a good sign."
