It also urged to take action against CEC and other election commissioners for irregularities in polls

Shushashoner Jonno Nagorik (Shujan) has urged the president to form a Supreme Judicial Council to probe reports of irregularities in the 11th parliamentary election and inconsistencies in poll results.

Shujan, a civil society platform working for good governance, came up with the urge at a press conference held at Dhaka Reporters' Unity in Dhaka on Tuesday.

Dilip Kumar Sarkar, central coordinator of Shujan, read out its written statement during the press conference presided over by former caretaker government adviser M Hafizuddin Khan.

At the briefing, Shujan Secretary Badiul Alam Majumdar said several irregularities and inconsistencies were found in the national election results, released by the Election Commission.

The commission's data shows that 100% votes were cast in 213 polling centers under 103 electoral areas while more than 90% ballots were cast in 7,902 polling centers, the briefing informed.

The civil society platform also found massive inconsistencies in the center-wise election results published by the EC officially and by the returning officers unofficially.

Badiul said they made the findings public based on the EC information. And, this was enough to launch investigation by forming a Supreme Judicial Council, he said.

He also urged to form the council for taking action against the chief election commissioner and other election commissioners for the irregularities.

Jurist Shahdeen Malik, in the briefing, termed the 100% voter turnout in the polls as "totally absurd".

He said: "The Election Commission falsified the results and the chief along with other election commissioners should face an investigation under a Supreme Judicial Council.

"We observed that the ministers of the government are criticizing negative reports published by international organizations questioning the information source. The authorities have no way to raise question now as the source of the report was the Election Commission."

During the briefing, Columnist Syed Abul Maksud said there was no record in Bangladesh's election history where it witnessed a 100% voter turnout.

Local government expert Tofail Ahmed said the EC’s centre-wise results proved inconsistencies and it created a big example of bad election.

Earlier on June 30, Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda told journalists that the commission had nothing to do even though casting of 100% votes in some centres in the general election was not considered as normal.

He also said that if a case was filed in court, and if the court cancels the election and orders a new one, then that is under their jurisdiction.
