The mayor said three roads of the city will remain closed to all kinds of rickshaw

Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Sayeed Khokon yesterday announced mobile court drives against illegal, and battery-run rickshaws across Dhaka.

The mayor said this after a meeting with the leaders of rickshaw-van owners, labour organizations, and Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority (DTCA) committee members at the Nagar Bhaban.

“Together, we decided to take action against illegal [vehicles which do not have a licence from DSCC], and battery-run rickshaws," he said.

He also said that the rickshaw ban on the three major city routes—Progoti Sarani from Kuril to Sayedabad via Rampura and Khilgaon; Mirpur Road from Gabtoli to Azimpur via Asad Gate; and Elephant Road from Science Laboratory Intersection to Shahbagh Intersection—will remain in place.

To tackle the situation, he said "a large number of public transport" options will be provided. "BRTC will provide 20-30 buses in these three thoroughfares."

Mayor Sayeed also promised labour leaders, and rickshaw-van owners to provide road crossing points so that rickshaws could move to either side of the roads in the  three routes.

"Traffic division of the police will fix the crossing points after conducting a thorough survey,” he added.

Md Ensur Ali, general secretary of Bangladesh Sarak Paribahan Sramik League, said: “We support the decision of banning illegal, and battery-run rickshaws. If these two types of rickshaws, and vans are withdrawn from Dhaka, then all rickshaw-pullers with registered vehicles will remain on the permitted roads only.”

Previously, on June 19, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader announced forming of the DTCA special committee, led by Mayor Sayeed Khokon, at the authority's 12th board meeting.

This special committee decided to ban rickshaws on these three routes, which came into effect from July 7.
