560 more dengue patients hospitalized

This is the highest number of dengue patients diagnosed in a single day this year, as of July 24

Amid claims by the authorities concerned that dengue in Dhaka is under control, at least 560 new patients have been reported to be admitted in hospitals in the last 24 hours – the highest in a single day this year, as of Wednesday.

Of them, 381 patients were diagnosed in Dhaka alone, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

With Wednesday’s new hospital admissions, the total number of dengue diagnoses in July this year stands at 6,197, and the total number this year stands at 8,565, according to the .

Among the infected patients, two patients suffered from haemorrhage, reports UNB.

Dr Ayesha Akter, assistant director of the DGHS Health Emergency Operation Centre and Control Room, said 2,058 patients have been undergoing treatment for dengue, while eight people have died from the disease this year.

On Tuesday, a total of 473 patients were hospitalized in different hospitals in Dhaka. 

With nearly all Dhaka hospitals struggling to cope with the increasing flow of dengue patients, the mayors of two Dhaka city corporations maintain that the situation is “under control.”

Officials, however, said the number is much higher as many cases remain unreported.

Dengue, a mosquito-borne virus, spreads among humans when an infected Aedes mosquito bites them. It has no known cure or vaccine yet.

According to the DGHS, in the last 24 yours, 145 dengue patients were admittedat Dhaka Medical College Hospital, 57 atMitford Hospital, 11 atChildren’s Hospital, 48 at Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, 79 at Holy Family and Red Crescent Hospital, 4at Birdem Hospital, 16 at police hospital, 55 at Mugda Medical College Hospital, 6At Kurmitola General Hospital and 136 atdifferent private clinics around Dhaka.  

DGHS chief Abul Kalam Azad said the health authorities had taken several steps to ensure proper treatment of dengue patients.
