Police have rescued a domestic help from Dhaka’s Shantinagar area after she was found hanging from a veranda of an apartment on the 10th floor of a building.
The rescued 16-year-old domestic help, identified as Khadija, has been rescued and sent to Victim Support Centre of Dhaka Metropolitan Police in Tejgaon on Tuesday.
Ramna police station Officer-in-Charge Kazi Mainul Islam confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune.
When contacted, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Victim Support Centre Additional Deputy Commissioner Nusrat Jahan Mukta told Dhaka Tribune that Khadija is currently under their custody and she is doing well there.
"We are trying to contact Khadija’s family so that we can hand her over to them," the official added.
On Tuesday noon, a video showing Khadija hanging outside the veranda’s sunshade of an apartment of the 15-storey building went vital on social media.
Later on Wednesday, another video surfaced on social media showing Khadija being questioned about why she was hanging from the veranda of an apartment on the 10th floor of a building and was she being tortured or abused.
In the video she said that she got out from the varenda using the makeshift grill and then could not get back in thus she stayed their till her employer came and rescued her.
When asked about Khadija being tortured or abused by her employer, she said noting of that sort happened.
The video also showed the owner of the house, identified as Lovely Rahman, opening a pocket door on the veranda’s safety grill to let the domestic help come inside the house.
Police sources said Lovely, who claims to be a human right activist, told police that she has two domestic helps at her house and Khadija had a quarrel with the other and went outside on the veranda’s sunshade by opening the pocket door.
