There are 492 dengue patients at the 500-bed Mugda General hospital in Dhaka at present, Dhaka 9 constituency MP Saber Hossain Chowdhury said on Tuesday.

He made the statement while briefing the media about the dengue situation in his constituency, which includes the Mugda area.

Between July and August so far this year, a total of 1,198 patients have been admitted to the hospital with dengue fever, 697 have been discharged after treatment, while nine died.

The patients who died of dengue, came to this hospital in a critical condition, he added.

He said if the situation continues to worsen, the hospital may have to set up a temporary camp within its premises to treat dengue patients.

Doctors and nurses are getting the fever as well.

Saber Hossain said seven doctors and 27 nurses of the hospital had been affected by dengue fever.

He recommended that everyone do the NS1 test only if the doctors prescribed so.

“To date, 2,300 patients had the test, and only 600 of them were positive,” he informed.

Mugdha General Hospital Deputy Director Dr Md Khairul Alam said patients at the hospital are very reluctant to use a mosquito net for 24 hours a day because of the summer heat.

He said this a challenge they are facing because dengue virus can spread through another mosquito if it bites a dengue infected person.

Ward commissioners at the press conference said school authorities should be extra vigilant and check if there is stagnant water in the school premises as Aedes mosquitoes lay eggs in still water.
