With the Eid-ul-Azha just around the corner, the government has taken strict security measures across the country, as it does before every Eid, to help holidaymakers enjoy a hassle-free, and safe festival with their families.

Some 150,000 police personnel, and 50,000 members drawn from Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), and Ansar have been deployed to contain the law and order situation.

Moreover, law enforcers will also keep an eye on the roads and highways in order to discipline vehicular movements as hundreds of thousands of people are travelling from the major cities, including Dhaka and Chittagong, to their respective ancestral homes for Eid celebrations.

As more home-goers are leaving every day, cities like Dhaka are becoming less crowded, and vulnerable to robbery or arson with lots of empty apartments, and office buildings.

The law enforcers  having detained over 150 suspected criminals, including muggers, dope gang members, and fake currency-makers in the last 10 days, hints that the city people and home-goers face the risk of falling in trouble.

Different law enforcing agencies said they are well aware of the likely criminal activities, and have already launched a clampdown at different bus and launch terminals, and railway stations, to nab culprits.

Intelligence agencies also intensified their surveillance, especially to contain any attempt by radical groups centring the Eid.

Police, RAB, and intelligence agencies are also keeping an eye on cattle markets.

In Dhaka city alone, at least 32 teams of law enforcers have been deployed.

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mohammad Javed Patwary recently said, any vehicle carrying sacrificial animals will not be stopped unless there are specific complaints against it, in order to maintain the flow of vehicles on the roads and highways.

Cattle traders have been given a set of directives to follow in order to avoid any harassment on the roads.

Meanwhile, the fire service urged the city people to turn off all switches of stoves, and electronic gadgets, to avert any fire incident or explosion.

RAB Director General Benazir Ahmed on Friday said CCTV cameras will be installed on the premises of all the important Eidgah, including the national Eidgah, to ensure security.

“We have two important events that are coming up– Eid-ul-Azha, and August 15 (Mourning Day). We have separate plans on pre-Eid, Eid, and post-Eid days. And we are working to implement the plans,” he said.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia on Saturday said, the national Eidgah is completely ready for the Eid prayers as a five-tier security system has been imposed there, and also in Baitul Mukarram National Mosque.

Urging the devotees to come to the Eidgah carrying prayer mats and umbrellas, he said the Eidgah-goers will be allowed into the prayer ground only after a thorough security check.

Similar measures will be applicable in other venues where Eid jamaats (congregation) are to be held in the city.

He asked them not to carry any inflammable substances, knife, and matches.
