Mob beats up policeman suspected of mugging

The incident happened in the Motijheel area in Dhaka around 4pm Wednesday, September 4, 2019

A police constable was injured after an  angry mob beat him up over his alleged link to mugging.

The incident happened in the Motijheel area in Dhaka around 4pm yesterday. The injured Mamun, 35, is posted in Bangshal police station. He received treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).

Regarding the matter, Motijheel police station OC Omar Faruk told Dhaka Tribune: “A man named Abdul Kalam, an electric goods trader in the Motijheel area, owed Constable Mamun’s friend Jitu, money. Jitu, along with Mamun, blocked Kalam in front of Mohammedan club area and tried to forcefully take Tk10 lakh that Kalam was carrying at the time. 

“At one point, Jitu and Mamun started beating Kalam,” the OC added.

“Kalam started yelling ‘hijacker.’ Hearing his screams, locals rushed to his help. Jitu fled the scene, but the angry mob started beating Mamun. Later we went there and detained both of them. Both Mamun and Kalam were injured,” the OC said.

“We are looking for Jitu. Kalam’s money is now safe in police custody,” he added.

The OC said they were investigating the matter. “We will take legal action after knowing what had happened.”
