Payne: Australia to intensify development cooperation with Bangladesh

The two foreign ministers pledged to work together to promote peace, stability and prosperity in Indian Ocean region in the meeting

Australian Foreign Minister Marise Payne has said Australia is set to intensify development cooperation with Bangladesh and promote the economic partnership in the years ahead.

She made this remark in a bilateral meeting with Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen on Thursday.

Marise Payne was on a three-day visit to Bangladesh to attend third IORA Blue Economy Ministerial Conference held in Dhaka on September 4-5.

Dr Momen expressed his gratitude to the visiting minister for reaffirming their support for the repatriation of the forcefully displaced Rohingyas.

Before coming to Bangladesh Payne visited Myanmar to assess the circumstance with regard to Repatriation.

She assured that Australia is set to remain engaged with international community to put pressure on Myanmar to create conducive environment towards safe and sustainable Rohingya repatriation.

Foreign Minister Momen said Rohingyas are fearful to return to Rakhine state because of trust deficiency, and underlined the importance of early repatriation of the Rohingyas under international observation.

Minister Payne also said she has read reports and visited Cox's Bazar Rohingya camp to understand the crisis, the real circumstance, and the ground situations of Rohingya issue.

She mentioned Australia is set to continue its communication with Myanmar for solving the Rohingya crisis and to increase its humanitarian assistance for the displaced people through NGOs and UN agencies.

Australian foreign minister further appreciated economic development of Bangladesh under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

She said Australia is set to grow its relations with Bangladesh with greater engagement.

The two foreign ministers pledged to work together to promote peace, stability and prosperity in Indian Ocean region. 

In light of growing business interactions and people-to-people contact between Bangladesh and Australia, Dr Momen requested Australian foreign minister to review Australia's travel advisory on Bangladesh.

The Bangladesh foreign minister also requested to shift the visa office at Australian High Commission in Dhaka which has been currently shifted to New Delhi.

Dr Momen requested Payne to lift the air cargo restrictions in light of meeting the aviation security standards at Dhaka airport.

Minister Payne assured that Australian side will follow up on these requests and report back to them.
