Road accidents have become a common occurrence in the country due to the mismanagement of the government and the transport owners, human rights activist Advocate Sultana Kamal has said.
“Road crashes kill more people than any epidemic,” Sultana Kamal said while addressing a press conference organized by the Jatru Kalyan Samity at the National Press Club in Dhaka on Friday.
“The number of road accidents in the country is on the rise due to the absence of good governance and accountability of the concerned authorities,” Sultana Kamal, also the chairperson of the trustee board of Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB), said.
There is no security of life, if anyone goes out of the house, the family members have to wait in uncertainty till the person’s return, she said adding: "Why should public suffer for the fault of others?"
Despite requests from the right activists the transport owners continue to run their vehicles on daily basis violating rules, she said.
"The government should take strict measures to stop this bad mentality."
People and politicians both have to understand their own responsibilities and stop blaming each other, she said, adding: "Those who are responsible positions are not sincere and they get away without performing their duties. This is all possible due to the lack of good governance and strict management."
Awami League fails to provide security to its citizen
The Awami League, despite being in power for a long time and having more involvement with people than any other parties, has utterly failed to give its citizens security, Sultana Kamal said.
Speaking at the press conference, Awami League Lawmaker Mainuddin Khan Badal asked the government to free footpaths of Dhaka city from occupants so that pedestrians can use them.
"Rich people use their private vehicles and violate traffic rules the most, get away showing their power. They do not travel in buses, then how can they feel the sufferings of the ordinary people and talk about solutions in parliament?” the lawmaker said.
