They came up with the demand at a protest rally on the campus on Sunday

A group of students and the left-leaning student body of Dhaka University (DU) have demanded exclusion of former president and general secretary of Bangladesh Chhatra League from their posts at the Dhaka University Central Students' Union (Ducsu), and the university senate.

The demands came following Saturday’s development after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina relieved the duo from Bangladesh Chhatra League’s top posts for various controversies, and allegations of corruption against them.

The prime minister also selected new leadership for the ruling party’s student body on Saturday.

“As Golam Rabbani has been relieved from the organizational post, I think he should not stay in the Ducsu post too, as there is no moral ground,” Ducsu Vice President Nurul Haque Nur told Dhaka Tribune.

“I have already met with Ducsu President Prof M Akhtaruzzaman, and informed him about the issue. I also requested him to call a meeting for taking a decision in this regard.”

In this regard, Ducsu President, also DU VC Prof Akhtaruzzaman said: “Ducsu is a body of student representatives and it has a constitution, so it will run accordingly.”

What the Ducsu constitution says?

The Ducsu constitution does not have any provision on what to do if a leader, and Ducsu nominated senate member loses their organisational post.

On that ground, Shovon and Rabbani can continue their duties as senate member, and Ducsu GS respectively.

The section under clause 12(b), which deals with ‘Lapse of Membership’, only mentions on how a post should be filled if it became vacated.

According to the Ducsu constitution, its president can dismiss any office bearer or member of the executive committee or to dissolve the executive committee as a whole and call for a fresh election or take such other action if he/she thinks appropriate for running the union for the best interest.

Protest continues

Left-leaning student organization Bangladesh Chhatra Federation has demanded exclusion of former president and general secretary of Bangladesh Chhatra League from their respective post of the university senate, and the Ducsu.

At a protest rally on the campus yesterday, the protesters also demanded immediate arrest of the duo for corruption allegations.

Addressing a rally at the Ducsu premises, Chhatra Federation Secretary Salman Farshi said the glorious history of Ducsu has been tarnished as the union’s GS has been removed from his own organization over allegations of extortion, and corruption.

“We demand expulsion of Golam Rabbani from the Ducsu GS post immediately,” he said.

Federation's central secretary Jahid Sujon said that the former president and general secretary should not stay in these posts as they have morally degraded.

Meanwhile, quota reformists, and some students of the university also brought out a procession on the campus demanding resignation of vice chancellor Prof M Akhtaruzzaman, and Shibli Rubayat Ul Islam allegedly for providing them with illegal admission facilities at an evening course prior to the Ducsu polls.

'Punishing Chhatra League president, secretary is unique'

Terming the action taken against the former president and general secretary from their posts is "unique", Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader said: "These two have been forced to resign for breaching of party discipline."

Quader, also the road transport and bridges minister, made the statement while inspecting Bhulta Flyover at Rupganj upazila in Narayanganj yesterday morning.

The government has taken zero tolerance against corruption, said the minister adding that none will be left unpunished if irregularities are proven against them.
