Earlier this year, Bangladesh purchased 600 buses and 500 trucks from Indian companies under the line of credit from the Indian government

Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader has ordered Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC) chairman to investigate the allegations of purchasing "defective" buses from India.

Quader gave the directive after a meeting with BRTC officials at its headquarters in Motijheel on Monday.

He asked the BRTC chief to investigate whether the “defective” buses were purchased on purpose and also whether there were any irregularities in the whole process.

The minister also warned BRTC officials to refrain from corruption, saying that the state owned company does not need any corrupt officials.

"Action will be taken against corrupt BRTC officials,” Quader added.

Earlier this year, Bangladesh purchased 600 buses and 500 trucks from Indian companies under the line of credit from the Indian government.

According to recent media reports, some of the buses purchased from India are “faulty” and water leaks from the roof of the bus when it rains.

Awami League to support JaPa in Rangpur 3 by-polls

While talking with the press after the meeting, Quader, also Awami League general secretary said there is a possibility that Awami League might render its support for Jatiya Party's (JaPa) candidate in the Rangpur-3 by-polls.

"We are thinking about the by-polls.  There is a possibility that we might share the seat with Jatiya Party," he said.

The by-election for the Rangpur 3 constituency, which fell vacant following the death of HM Ershad, will be held on October 5.

Awami League nominated Advocate Rezaul Karim Raju, the general secretary of Rangpur district Awami League, Jatiya Party nominated Rahgir Al Mahi alias Saad Ershad, eldest son of JaPa founding chairman late HM Ershad and party co-chairman Raushan Ershad, and BNP nominated Rita Rahman, chief of People's Party of Bangladesh, to contest the upcoming by-polls.
