Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) Directorate of Students' Welfare (DSW) Director Mizanur Rahman has said Vice Chancellor Prof Saiful Islam could not come to the campus due to "illness."

He made the statement after meeting demonstrating students at the Central Shaheed Minar on Dhaka University campus on Tuesday morning.

The Buet official arrived at the Central Shaheed Minar just few hours after the agitated students threatened to lay seize on main roads, if the VC and DSW fails to meet them by 5pm on Tuesday.

Mentioning he does not have jurisdiction to fulfill all of their demands, the Buet official said: “I can only place and discuss the demands with authority.”

Mizanur also assured students that the university authority will consider if the students apply for a ban on student politics.

Abrar, a second year student of electrical and electronic engineering department of the university, was beaten to death on Monday. Some Chhatra League leaders have been accused of beating him for his alleged involvement with Islami Chhatra Shibir, the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami.

Meanwhile, Abrar's father Barkat Ullah filed a murder case against 19 people with Chawkbazar police station on Monday evening.

Later, Bangladesh Chhatra League expelled 11 of its members permanently from the organization for their involvement in Abrar’s murder.

Abrar’s death sparked protest across Bangladesh. The protesters have demanded justice for Abrar and capital punishment for the murderers.

As of now, 10 people have been arrested in connection to the murder.
