Police have foiled a civic rally by Jatiya Oikya Front demanding justice for Buet student Abrar Fahad who was brutally killed by a few Chhatra League leaders last week in a residential hall on Buet Campus in Dhaka.

Oikya Front, a broad-based political alliance of primarily four parties, attempted to go to the Central Shaheed Minar with a rally to protest the killing of Abrar Fahad.

Several hundred leaders and activists of the alliance, led by its Convener Dr Kamal Hossain, took out the rally wearing black badges and holding black flags from the National Press Club towards the Central Shaheed Minar around 5:10pm yesterday.

However, members of the law enforcement agencies put up a barricade while Oikya Front activists tried to launch the rally.

The Oikya Front leaders tried to break the police barricade, but failed.

At one stage, police allowed the vehicle, carrying Dr Kamal, to go to his Bailey Road residence while the alliance leaders left the spot in the face of obstruction by law enforcement.

At the same time, Oikya Front leaders and activists had to give up the event and eventually abandoned the planned rally.

Earlier before the rally, Oikya Front leaders held a public discussion event at the auditorium of the National Press Club protesting the murder of Abrar.

Addressing the event, Oikya Front Convenor Dr Kamal Hossain urged the government to reassess its role and open up government affairs to public scrutiny.

Commenting on the recent killing of Buet student Abrar Fahad, Dr Kamal said : “What was Abrar’s fault? They [Chhatra League] murdered Abrar. Are the killers human or inhuman beings? Why are you [Government] delegating them to become beasts? You [Government] cannot claim that you are doing a good job.”

Nagorik Oikya Convener Mahmudur Rahman Manna announced holding a public rally at any open space or ground in the city on October 18 on the same issue.

Mahmudur Rahman Manna, Convener of Nagorik Oikya, ASM abdur Rab, president Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal, Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku, BNP leader,  Professor Abu Sayeed, among others, addressed the discussion program.

Abrar Fahad, 21, a resident of Sher-e-Bangla Hall of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet), was beaten to death allegedly by some Chhatra League leaders and activists of the university unit last week.
