A larger number of cases is being registered with the courts since the judiciary was made independent, she said

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina says there are new dimensions added to the courts, and the number of cases has also increased following judicial independence.

She made this remark in replying to a question regarding the verdict in the Nusrat murder case at a press conference on Tuesday, held at her official Ganobhaban residence  where she was briefing reporters on her Azerbaijan tour, reports UNB.

“A larger number of cases is being registered with the courts after the independence of the judiciary,” she said.

Speaking about the verdict in the Nusrat murder case for which 16 peoplewere sentenced to death, Sheikh Hasina said the verdict came swiftly as Nusrat was able to record her own statement before her death.

"Nusrat was a very brave girl and her statement was crucial to justice being served," she added.

In most murder cases, the premier said, a lack of witnesses causes serious trouble. She continued: "However, in this case, public opinion as well as the media played important roles with their continuous reporting.

"I appreciate everyone's efforts, which helped in the quick disposal of this case."

Prime Minster Sheikh Hasina also said the government will take necessary measures in order to maintain the speedy disposal of cases like the Nusrat murder case.
