Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan has said few sections of Road Transport Act 2018 need to be clarified.
He passed the remark in his residence following a meeting with Bangladesh Transport Workers Federation leaders on Saturday.
He said: "Some of the nine sections of the Road Transport Act need to be simplified. Therefore, law enforcers have been asked to consider those issues until June 30, 2019."
While talking about the validity of a few of the federation’s demands regarding transport fitness and license, the home minister said the law enforcement will be lenient on those matters.
However, he said issues like parking in the middle of the street and causing traffic will not be tolerated.
Asaduzzaman asked the drivers to make their licenses up-to-date before June 30. He sought Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) chairman and Road Transport and Bridges minister's co-operation in this regard.
He further said: "Fake license holders will be identified and not be spared."
On the fitness of vehicles, the home minister said: “Our vehicle owners have brought modifications to the original model. A BRTA committee will be formed and decision will be taken based on their recommendation.”
Responding to queries on whether amendments will be made, Asaduzzaman said the suggestions will be forwarded to the Road Transport and Bridges Ministry where a decision will be taken in this regard.
At least 30 transport leaders, led by Bangladesh Road Transport Workers Federation (BRTWF) Executive President Shajahan Khan attended the meeting.
He said: "We never said we will not obey the Road Transport Act 2018. However, there are some inconsistencies in the law and we demand their clarification."
Shajahan continued that they did not demand the jail punishment to be reduced instead wanted justified fines for the poor drivers.
While talking about their strike, he said: "We called off the strike as it is not our profession. However, we have no other choice left to go on strike when our demands do not get fulfilled."
Shajahan added that they will announce further activities if there is no development in the Road Transport Act 2018 by June 30, 2020.
